Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League - Matchday 5: 18th May

Grimsby drew six points clear at the top of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League after winning one of the day’s two closest games.

Market Deeping batted first at Augusta Street and made 221, skipper David Gillett hitting 70 and David White recording his best bowling figures for Grimsby with five for 53.

In reply, the home side were soon in trouble on eight for three but once again the younger generation came to the rescue, Harry Warwick and Jack Wilson putting on 119 for the fourth wicket.

Warwick made 77 and Wilson 45 as Grimsby closed in on their target and it was Lee Charlton with an unbeaten 57 who saw them to victory with just three balls of the match left.

Skegness had only two balls to go when they claimed victory over Bracebridge Heath. Chasing the former champions’ 165 for seven, of which Hymie Bentley made 52, the Seasiders scraped home with just two wickets still standing to share fourth place with Market Deeping.

Spalding continued their giant-killing spree with a convincing win over 2012 champions Haxey. Having seen off Bracebridge Heath two weeks ago, the league newcomers were once again indebted to Zimbabwean Campbell Light, who hit 55 as the home side were out for a modest 147. Paul Bell and Josh Savage each took four wickets.

Light then showed his bowling skills, taking seven for 35 off nine overs as Haxey were all out for a paltry 56.

Sleaford continued their rapid climb up the league, moving into joint second place after beating Hartsholme by eight wickets at London Road. Tom Shorthouse made 58 for the home side.

Sharing second position is Louth, who were held to a draw by Lindum. Louth recorded the day’s highest total of 244 for six without any batsman topping 50, but Karanjit Bansal made 52 for Lindum and from 141 for five, Ben Powell and Jon Miller saw out the remainder of the innings, taking eight points to Louth’s 14.

Prasanna Jayawardena returned to batting form with an unbeaten 57 as Woodhall Spa beat Bourne by five wickets at Abbey Lawn. Pete Morgan made 60 for Bourne and Sathpath Kelum took six for 37 for the visitors.

Results:

Spalding 147 (Light 55), Haxey 56 (Light 7-35);

Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League - Matchday 4: 11th May

Only two games were completed in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League as rain hit Lincoln and the surrounding area.

Market Deeping and Sleaford benefited from the abandonments elsewhere, Deeping moving top of the table after beating Skegness and Sleaford overcoming Lindum, who were reduced to 10 men when Richard Bishop broke his finger in the warm-up.

Whilst play was possible at St Giles Avenue, albeit with a number of interruptions, the games at Hartsholme and Bracebridge Heath were abandoned, as were those at Louth and Woodhall Spa.

Outgang Lane suffered least from the wet weather, Paul Butler hitting an unbeaten 58 as Skegness reached 176-9. Chris Jones then made 67 as, despite having to leave the field in heavy rain with only four runs needed for victory, Deeping eventually claimed a five-wicket win to move them three points ahead of Grimsby and Louth.

Shaun Morris took six for 46 at Lindum as the home side were all out for 109, a total Sleaford overtook for the loss of five wickets. New Zealand pro Tim MacIntosh hit 51.

This moved Sleaford up to fifth, one point behind Skegness and one ahead of Bracebridge Heath, where only 14 overs were bowled. At Woodhall, half the first innings was possible, at Louth 18 overs were bowled, but at Hartsholme just three balls were sent down before the game was called off.

Results:

Skegness 176-9 (Butler 58no), Market Deeping 177-5 (Jones 67);

Lindum 109 (Morris 6-46), Sleaford 112-5 (MacIntosh 51);

Louth 78-1 v Spalding – Match abandoned, rain.

Bracebridge Heath 49-2 v Haxey – Match abandoned, rain.

Woodhall Spa 114-3 v Grimsby – Match abandoned, rain.

Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League - Matchday 3: 4th May

Spalding secured their first win in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League at the weekend, knocking Bracebridge Heath off the top spot at the same time.

With joint-leaders Skegness also losing at home to Woodhall Spa, Louth took the opportunity to move into first place after coming out on the right side of a draw at Sleaford in the highest scoring game of the day.

Arran Brindle hit 59 and Azeem Ghumann scored the second century of the league season (103) to help the visitors to 282 for seven. But Sleaford were also in run-scoring mode, Oliver Burford making 60 before the overs ran out with the total on 246 for eight.

Grimsby went up into second place and Harry Clewett was man of the match for the second week in succession after victory over Hartsholme. Clewett (66) and Steve Crossley (64) put on 120 for Grimsby’s fifth wicket and the home side reached 226 before the final wicket fell in the 49th over.

Richard Genge took five wickets for Hartsholme, but Clewett went one better with six for 18 as Hartsholme were all out for 118, leaving them bottom of the table after three games.

Lindum stay just above Hartsholme despite a winning draw at Bourne. Karanjit Bansal made 66 and Charlie Tomlinson 55 as Lindum reached 208 for three, but Ben Stroud’s 50 pushed Bourne’s score along and at the close the home side were 175 for six.

Matt Sergeant was the mainstay of Woodhall’s win over Skegness, who slipped to third. Sergeant’s unbeaten 79 saw his side to 218 for eight and Sathpath Kelum then took five wickets as the seasiders were all out for 150.

Campbell Light was the architect of Spalding’s win, his seven for 70 helping to bowl Bracebridge out for 118, Nick John making 61.

Bracebridge reached 95 for one before wickets began to tumble and Spalding also saw their innings collapse from 40 without loss to 68 for four, before Light’s innings of 42 got them to within sight of victory and new signing Ian Smith saw them home by four wickets.

Market Deeping went fifth after victory over champions Haxey, who were all out for 131. Kamran Raza took five for 38, before Deeping then lost four wickets before reaching their target.

Bracebridge Heath and Skegness were the only two teams to hold on to their unbeaten records in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League.

Matthew Bradley was the architect of Bracebridge’s win over Market Deeping, taking six for 27 as the home side were all out for 112. The visitors also found themselves in trouble on 28 for three but Nick John hit an unbeaten 55 to take them to a six- wicket victory.

A half century for Ricky Lovelace saw Skegness to an eight-wicket win at Ashby Avenue where Hartsholme were bowled out for 128.

Haxey’s Graeme Attenborough was the unluckiest batsman of the day, getting out on 99 at Woodhall Spa, for whom Prasanna Jayawardene celebrated his first appearance with an innings of 65.

Haxey’s Josh Savage was the bowler who claimed the Sri Lankan’s wicket after the visitors had made 212 for eight, three wickets falling to Northants player Lee Daggett. But Sam Evison with 50 and Jayawardene helped Woodhall to a five-wicket win.

New signing Harry Clewett continues to shine for Grimsby, the former Cleethorpes player making 46 runs and taking three wickets at Lindum. Grimsby finished their 50 overs on 232 for eight, and despite Richard Bishop’s 51, Lindum had only reached 135 when the final wicket fell.

Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League - Matchday 1: 20th April

Grimsby’s Neal Snell hit the only century as brilliant sunshine welcomed the first weekend of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League season.

But despite the Grimsby player’s efforts, Louth came out on top in the day’s highest scoring match.

Arran Brindle hit 71 for the home side, with Jason Collinson and overseas signing Azeem Ghumman contributing 44 and 43 respectively as Louth reached 233 for six. David White took three wickets for Grimsby, who were then reduced to 10 for two by Andy Carrington.

Snell came to the crease with the score on 47 for three and was ably supported by Jack Wilson, Harry Clewett and Lee Charlton as the score crept up. However, the overs ran out with the visitors 18 short of their target with Snell unbeaten on 100.

Champions Haxey got off to a good start with Graeme Attenborough’s 47 helping his side to 175 before the final wicket fell. South African Josh Savage then celebrated his arrival in the league with two wickets in two balls in his first over.

Despite some dogged resistance from Christian Millar and Louis Kimber, with a stand of 32 for the third wicket, Hartsholme never recovered from this early blow and when Attenborough and Mark Atkins joined forces in the attack, wickets fell steadily.

Liam Moir-Holland batted steadily for his unbeaten 22 but ran out of partners with the total on 86, Atkins with four wickets and Attenborough and Savage with three each.

Four teams picked up the maximum 20 points – Bracebridge Heath, Bourne, Market Deeping and Skegness.

Bracebridge welcomed two new signings, Australian Bray Stephenson, who took three wickets, and Matt Carter, formerly of Cherry Willingham, who took four as Woodhall Spa were bowled out for 74. The home side reached their target for the loss of four wickets, all falling to Ben O’Brien.

Spalding’s Premier League debut got off to a disastrous start as the newcomers lost their top five batsmen for just 16 runs to Market Deeping’s Ali Sharp and Tom Andrews.

Zimbabwean Campbell Light stopped the slide, adding 58 with Michael Kearns but when Light fell to Mehul Adatia for 52, Spalding were reduced to 84 all out. Andrews finished with five for 24 while Adatia bowled 10 overs with eight maidens and took three for five.

Deeping had reached 24 when wickets began to fall and at 39 for four, a collapse could have been on the cards. But Chris Jones was still there and, first with Alex Wheatley and then with Adatia, the opener saw his side to a five-wicket victory with an unbeaten 34.

Bourne’s maximum haul came at the expense of Sleaford, who were all out for 133 despite an opening knock of 59 from new signing Ben Raine. Raine was dismissed by Darren Cousins who went on to take four wickets, while Colin Cheer claimed three.

Conrad Louth and Peter Morgan then hit 54 and 50 respectively to take Bourne to a nine-wicket win.

Sean Williams, Australian but with a British passport, announced his arrival at Skegness with a haul of five for 39 off 13 overs to help bowl Lindum out for 133. Richard Bishop top-scored with 37 and Geoff Middleton hit 36.

From 42 without loss, the Seasiders found themselves 50 for three but Richie Hewitt and Paul Butler added 62 and Butler’s knock of 36 helped his side to a four-wicket win.

READERS LINCOLNSHIRE ECB PREMIER LEAGUE 2013 PREVIEW

A number of familiar faces return to the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League for the 2013 season.

Former top batsman Warren Nel has left the Nottinghamshire Premier League to join newly-promoted Spalding while Charlie Tomlinson, who has had several seasons with Cleethorpes in the Yorkshire League, heads back to Lindum.

And a second Cleethorpes player, Stuart Airey, who also had a spell with Bracebridge Heath, will be playing at Bourne.

Also returning to the league with Spalding are Tim and Steve Norris and Rob Ambrose who skippers the side – all last seen when Long Sutton played in the league - while Stella Norris is now secretary and scorer.

In addition, Spalding field former Market Deeping brothers Charlie and Michael Kearns and have prepared for the first season in the top flight by signing batsman Jack Barrett from Moulton Harrox.

But the talking point of the new season is the appearance of two internationals. Woodhall Spa clinched the deal of the year with the signing of Sri Lankan wicketkeeper/batsman Prasanna Jayawardene, while Sleaford pulled off a coup by securing the services of New Zealand batsman Tim McIntosh, who has a Test century against West Indies to his name.

Woodhall have stated that Jayawardene, scorer of almost 2,000 runs and four centuries in 52 Tests for his country, will play as a batsman as the club keeps faith with last year’s award-winning young wicketkeeper Jack Hughes.

The signing of Jonathan Cheer from Boston further strengthens the Woodhall line-up, which will be skippered for the fifth year by Jack Luffman, assisted by vice-captain Matthew Sargeant while newly-appointed Head Coach Paul Timby will work with Jayawardene in developing the Woodhall Spa Academy.

Woodhall’s opening match is away at Bracebridge Heath, who have added off- spinner/batsman Matt Carter to their squad, having lost Jonathan Darke who has moved to Kent.

Skegness have a had busy winter, appointing last year’s 2nd XI opening bat Richie Hewitt as 1st XI captain and signing Dan Milgate and Ricky Lovelace from Woodhall Spa and wicketkeeper Matthew Hood from Boston. From Australia comes seam bowler Sean Williams, who has a British passport, and 17-year-old batsman/off-spinner Jarrod Hoskins.

Two New Zealanders are heading for Hartsholme - seam bowling all-rounder Richard Genge and 18 year old Tim Brown – while Grimsby have opted for an Australian quickie to replace Carl Taylor.

Joel Hamilton currently plays alongside fast bowler Ryan Harris in Brisbane and will be partnered by fast bowler Charles Wright who has moved to Augusta Street from Woodhall Spa.

Slow bowlers have also been in skipper Jim Morgan’s sights, resulting in the acquisition of Harry Clewett from Cleethorpes and South Kelsey’s Connor Hawkins. Completing the new faces at Grimsby is Bracebridge Heath batsman Ross Carnelley.

Champions Haxey have opted for a Pakistani bowler to replace Chintaka Perera, who is sidelined for the season following a foot operation, and have also secured the services of Barton’s Ashley Hooper and Dominic Bishop from Caistor.

Louth’s overseas player, 24 year-old Azeem Ghumman, is also from Pakistan and Market Deeping have signed 18 year-old Ben Willemsen from Otago in New Zealand.

Deeping travel to league newcomers Spalding while league champions Haxey begin their season with a home fixture against Hartsholme.

Overview of the League

In October 1999, ten cricket clubs from all parts of Lincolnshire met to establish the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League - a partnership that had been over 30 years ago in the making!
This was the first time that teams in the south and north of the county had joined forces and the 2000 season saw Bourne, Grantham, Sleaford, Long Sutton and Market Deeping cricket clubs from the South Lincolnshire & Border League meet up with Grimsby, Market Rasen, Lindum, Caistor and Messingham from the Lincolnshire County Cricket League.
Ten teams soon became 12 and 2013 sees five of the founder clubs still playing in the league - Bourne, Sleaford, Market Deeping, Grimsby and Lindum.

Various changes have taken place over the years but the aim of the league remains the same - to encourage the development of young players and provide them with good pitches and a high standard of competition.
